Media Developer

Want to learn more about the intersection of craft beer and science? The QC2 lab at USM is looking for a motivated student with photography and media studies experience to help us promote the lab and grow our business! The QC2 Lab supports the brewing industry in New England by providing quality control testing services and educational opportunities for brewers. Our lab is unique in that we are both an analytical chemistry lab and a start-up business. This summer position will largely focus on content generation--both still photography and video production--for use on our website and social media. This position is available now and will continue through the fall semester, with the opportunity to extend the position further pending funding.

Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Create exceptional photo and video content that reflects the QC2 brand and mission
  • Edit photo and video content for use in multiple platforms (web, social media, advertising)
  • Collaborate with QC2 leadership to help develop social media marketing campaigns
  • Streamline existing digital asset management system to better archive images and organize files
  • Communicate with brewery partners to schedule photoshoots and interviews
  • Maintain high standards for creative output
  • Potential to create blog posts and website content

Position Details:

Part time, flexible schedule (≈10 hours per week)

Pay: $12.50/hr

Requirements: 

  • Photo and video experience: capturing, editing, etc.
  • Must have camera capable of capturing high resolution photo and video

Digital Marketer

Interested in science communication and the rapidly growing craft beverage industry in Maine? The QC2 Lab seeks a motivated student with digital marketing experience to help expand and improve the QC2 Lab’s online presence and market share. The QC2 Lab supports the brewing industry in New England by providing quality control testing services and educational opportunities for brewers. Our lab is unique in that we are both an analytical chemistry lab and a start-up business. The successful candidate will work closely with QC2 leadership to develop and implement a cohesive digital marketing strategy. This position is available now and will continue through the fall semester, with the opportunity to extend the position pending funding.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Research industry-related topics and identify opportunities for content generation
  • Search Engine Optimization and keyword research
  • Assist with email and social media campaigns
  • Collect quantitative and qualitative data from marketing campaigns
  • Identify advertising opportunities
  • Design marketing materials and write blog articles for online publication

Position Details:

Part time, flexible schedule (≈10 hours per week) with an opportunity to grow and continue work in the academic year

Pay: $12.50/hr

QC2 Laboratory Assistant

Come work the the Quality Control Collaboratory (QC2 Lab) at USM. Analytical chemistry is the art and science of using instrumentation and methods to separate, identify, and quantify matter. In our lab we are taking this branch of chemistry and applying it to craft beverages. Through this application we use a variety of instruments and methods to analyze alcohol, flavor compounds, sugars, acids and much more. Our focus isn’t only on providing educational opportunities and testing services, we also have a robust research program that is dedicated to developing new and innovative analytical methods for quality testing in the brewing industry.

Students working in the lab will be trained to run chemical and biological testing on brewery samples that are submitted to the lab. You will also have the opportunity to help with workshops and research. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Conduct fee for service testing using methods including: chemical extraction, spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, and polymerase chain reaction technology.
  • Maintain accurate record of work in lab notebook.
  • Respond to emails, communicate schedule changes in advance, and work with lab members to complete tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Work independently and think critically about methods and data.
  • Potential to work on individual projects and research as part of progression in lab.
  • Reports to Lab Coordinator and Principal Investigator.

Position Details:

Part time, flexible schedule (≈10 hours per week)

Pay: $12.50/hr

Requirements: 

  • Must have successfully completed a full year of college level general chemistry with lab.
  • Sophomore or junior standing with GPA ≥ 2.5
