Current Opportunities at QC2

QC Brewery Internship Through the QC2 Lab

The QC2 lab at USM, known for supporting quality control testing and research for craft brewers, seeks motivated interns for a unique summer internship program. Undergraduate science students will get an opportunity through this internship program to apply their science knowledge and lab skills to supporting quality control (QC) testing programs at breweries in the GreaterPortland area. Interns will train with the QC2 lab team on common QC lab testing techniques and then work with a local brewery to support their quality control testing program by performing testing in the brewery and coordinating testing with the QC2 lab.

Responsibilities and Duties:

These will vary between breweries and will be assigned by the brewery and the QC2 lab during training.

  • Aseptically collect samples throughout the brewing process
  • Process sterile samples using ascetic technique on microbial media as defined by the brewery sampling plan
  • Monitor carbon dioxide and oxygen levels
  • Measure ABV and specific gravity
  • Enter data in central lab database
  • Communicate and collaborate with members of the quality team and brewery to ensure that all quality analyses are completed
  • Coordinate sample testing with USM QC2 lab when needed
  • Measure titratable acidity

Internships will begin in mid-May with a two-week training period in the QC2 lab where they will learn about the brewing process, be trained on important lab techniques and instrumentation, and learn how the testing results are used in a brewery setting. After training students will be matched with a brewery to begin their internship. Students may come to the QC2 lab from time to time to run tests.
